Carol Udale MA

Carol trained at Manchester Art College in 3D Design and started her career in Chester at the Abbey Green Studios, off Northgate Street, making and selling slip cast and hand-built pots.

After 19 years the pottery ended (too many cold cracked fingers from the clay and plaster moulds!) and now based in Mold, Flintshire, she went back to her first love of painting and drawing. Much of her work in clay had involved scored lines with a scalpel and then filled with copper oxides to make strong black lines on very geometric shapes. Somehow the same styles have made their way to her 2-dimensional work too.

She has spent the last 24 years honing her skills in drawing and watercolours with a bit of printing thrown in too. For the last 10 years she has had her rescue dog Daisy who insists on two walks every day. These walks have thrown up so much inspiration from trees, rivers, flowers and the general texture found in nature.

Once the children grew up, she promised herself some art college time and went to Glyndwr in Wrexham to do an MA in fine art (2011). A wonderful time printing and creating large images of partners in crime such as the Krays, Wests, Hindley and Brady and Bonnie and Clyde!

Forever evolving, Carol now produces bone china mugs and coasters with her paintings and designs on. During the beginning of the pandemic, she threw herself two challenges—one—learn how to make short videos of her techniques and two—make paper jewellery from the watercolour paper she uses. Some of the videos are on her Facebook page and each week her students get a little video related to the following week’s work. Several months of trial and error finally produced the earrings that she was happy with and now selling through ArtWorks2.

She is still taking Daisy for walks.
