Wacky Mabel

by Janet Jones

As a child my parents inspired me with their ‘can do’ attitude to making things. My Grandfather was a tailor and my Grandmother was the manager of the Singer Sewing machine shop in Rhyl. And so, it seemed appropriate when I completed a City & Guilds Fashion course, where I designed and made couture clothing to a very high standard.

Since then, I’ve been trained in many other craft skills including patchwork & quilting, wet felting, embroidery, pottery and upholstery. I now focus my skills into creating mostly brooches, traditional Welsh dolls with exaggerated tall hats, and appliqued/embroidered Welsh idiom pictures.

Every brooch is hand embroidered with it’s own individual features and clothing.

With all my work I inject colour and a sense of humour, whilst at the same time tapping into my Welsh roots.

One more thing…….why ‘Wacky Mabel’? I’ve been a poultry keeper for many years and Mabel, a Rhode Island Red, was my first and favourite. Why’s that? Because she was wacky of course! Hence she is part of my Business Name and Logo.

As well as the gallery at Betw y Coed, if often have a stall at the Makers Market, Wrexham and at the Ruthin Market. I also take commissions.
