Mike Potts

Mike has spent most of his life, from the age of 10, photographing wildlife, especially birds. Although initially it was a hobby he has spent over 35 years as a professional wildlife cameraman, working mostly for the BBC’s Natural History Unit in Bristol. He has filmed in over 50 countries from the Arctic to South Africa and Alaska to Australia.

Whilst having a busy filming career he never had time for other hobbies but always promised himself that when he hung up his filming boots he would try to learn to paint. That was over 4 years ago and after starting out with watercolours, and with mixed success, he has now settled on oils.

Since retiring from film making he has made several trips to the Antarctic. This has given him the inspiration to paint wild seascapes and seabirds, particularly Albatrosses, based on many hours spent on the rolling decks of ships and uses his extensive collection of photographs as reference material. Subjects closer to home, such as Puffins and Grey seals, are in progress.
